1. I am happy I had no expectations. This allowed me to challenge all of the assignments with an attitude of “I can do this.’’
2. Art is the application of elements and principles using multi-media. Art can also be a form of communication culturally. Viewing art is all in the eye of the beholder. I can still see the physiological side of art, but now I now what to look for in works of art.
3. I still like Louis Ickhardt.. His visual elements and principles are very appealing to me. If you study his artwork it tells a story.
4. I still feel that on-line courses can be a challenge. Students need to stay focused and on schedule.

self portrait

Self Portrait, 2010
Kimberly Will
I had a hard time finding self-portraits. I went to the Burchfield Penny Art Museum and they only had three. I found the self portraits interesting because I created my self portrait first. I noticed my self portrait expressed my personality. I am very easy going and down to earth. I noticed the personalities in the art work. Burchfield himself was a pretty intense person. His artwork had lots of colors and bold dramatic lines. I used color pencils to create my self portrait. I found my self comfortable knowing that if I made a mistake I could erase it. Being new at all of this artwork, I still have to become adventurous and daring with media. I will try different media when I am not on such a timed scheduled.(NO time for mistakes). I really did not find this to challenging. I noticed how many times I had to keep looking at the photo. My eyes were constantly sifting back and forth. With more practice, I sure it will become easier.Very simple. That is me. I don't let to many things get me upset, I need to live in harmony and I love to smile and be happy.I used shapes, lines, color,my portrait has symmetrical balance. There is visual color in my hair to express my highlights. There is definitely unity in the portrait.I enjoyed creating my work of art. I have to say I enjoyed the creation of the artworks during the class. Learning the true principles and elements of art and then applying them was the best part.

Viewing Power Points.
I reviewed, Salvation, Nature is Art and Change. I choose the exhibit on Change because I liked the theme, and I could see where the artists wanted the viewer to be. I felt I could help to enhance the exhibit with a few ideas and a little more analyzing and describing of artworks. I sometimes have a hard time being critical because of peoples feelings and never wanting to hurt them. I know students work hard and I would never want them to be discouraged. It was difficult not to feel that just my vision was correct. I had to stay open minded and some times when someone creates a work of art I try to realize that it is a place and time for them also. Yes I would like to read what my peers had to say. I say I would want to until I read the critiquing and then I become defensive. Critiquing and criticizing is so touchy. It makes me nervous!!!!! I would rate my article at a nine, for I felt I touched on aspects that could improve the exhibit, not just stating my opinion. I enjoyed this project, but I have to say I am a little bit exhausted.

Six Video's
1. According to Clement Greenberg writing about visual art is much harder than writing about literature or music. He feels to be a critic you must learn how to be relevant. Greenberg feels that art over the last fifty years has been predominantly abstract. There is prejudices in art criticism. Great critics of the past were not philosophical, but knew the nature and the values of judgment. Greenberg feels there is strong personal taste and aesthetics in art criticism. He also feels there is intuition, reasoning and relevance in art criticism. Greenberg has to wonder if modern art has proven itself. His book explained his reasoning behind aesthetics and his lack of desire to discuss history.
2. In the summer of 1947 Jackson Pollock paints his first spatter-drip piece. Pollock received the Guggenheim Award, and explains that he will paint large, moveable pictures that will function between the easel and the mural. The element of size was not critical to the historical placement. More important was his departure from the contained, boxed characteristic of modern paintings. Pollock moved away from containment and orderliness. Pollock is associated with Dionysian Painting. Greenberg feels that the some of Pollock paintings failed not because of technique, but because they simply failed to the eye. Pollock choose his particular way of applying to canvas because of the way the paint broke the plane or how the paint cut. The technique was a way to release the requirements of f his wrist, elbow, and shoulder. Pollocks “drip” painting can be characterized as Apollonian rather than Dionysian. No one has determined what makes a painting succeed or fail. Most artist want fame and money. Pollock was a solitary figure and realized his work would not be accepted as painting. Pollock died and early death.
3. Pollock was used as a negative point of reference for modern art and was also known as the Modern Master. Michael Fried strongly dislikes the description of art in vulgar existentialist terms. After the discussion of Pollocks work being optical he modified his ideas and he believes this was not a constructive point of view. Michael Fords early modernism stemmed from a rejection of the existentialist concept of action painting. T. J. Clark is also concerned with existential melodramas. T.J . defines quality as the ability of a painting to articulate the conditions of human beings at a particular movement. Both Fried and Clark are both committed to a historical significance can’t be separated from the pictorial quality.
4. The Renaissance is marked by a renewed enthusiasm in the arts and many Italian artists contribute to its development. Ancient Romans create art from natural beauty until Barbarians conquer the empire. Byzantine Empire focused on religious themes. Giotto is one of the first artist to revive the realistic style of the Romans by using perspective found in architecture and landscape. Ghiberti creates beautiful door panels of Biblical scenes for the Book of Genesis with a realistic vision of the human body. Donatello’s sculpture, David is standing in contrapposto. Even thought the figure is standing on one leg, it appears balanced. Nudes reflect the beauty of the human body. Uccello creates new views of human and animal figures. Masaccio’s figures reveal physical and psychological depth. The Madonna and Child, Francesca experiments with contrasting light and dark to create depth. The Catholic Church conveys Christianity through art. In Adoration of the Magi, Botticelli incorporates his patron, the Medicis. The Birth of Venus celebrates the beauty of the human body and uses techniques from the preceding artist. da Vinci applies science and math to art. In the Last Supper the figures appear naturally in their surroundings. Applying sfumato the The Mona Lisa, da Vinci blurs the edges of the forms. Raffaello is influenced by da Vinci and paints The Transfiguration in a controlled balanced structure. Michelangelo painted the Sistine Chapel in Florence which represents mans relationship to God.
5. Media artists express negative opinions about art critics. Critics get us to think, the general public. Film critics help people get the most out of the film dollar. Criticisms can also be fun for readers and viewers. Criticism of media arts improves the media in general. Critics can also give artists the big breaks they’re looking and hoping for. Book critics are likely the most influential in their ability to benefit new writers. Critics who are successful enjoy their craft. Some critics develop their joy of reading and enjoy plays and shows as young children. A music critic wants the world to experience the same love for music. Professional critics often find themselves acting as reporters. They discuss objectively and subjectively. A review is an informed opinion and criticism is more analytical. Reviewers write for audiences who are unfamiliar with a certain piece of work. Where as critic experts expect their readers to be all ready familiar with their work. Criticism takes a wider view. Criticism is generally delivered by someone willing to take a stand and make an argument. Superior criticism is characterized by how well it makes its argument, how it touches the human experience, and how useful are its insights. It also involves critical thinking, good writing, and choosing the right material. Emotional impact is part of criticism is it helps make a persuasive argument either in favor or against the art or artist. Effective criticism requires logic, emotional support, and personal credibility of the critic. The best critics start with their depth and breadth of knowledge. Critical thinking; Critics understand the media artists they write about and help the readers come to the same understanding. Critics understand how to apply their critical tools appropriately. Critics must break down their particular media arts in components. Six skills of critical thinking: Knowledge: arrange, define, duplicate, label, list, memorize, name, order, recognize, relate, recall, repeat, reproduce state. Comprehension: classify, describe, discuss, explain, express, identify, indicate, locate, recognize, report, restate, review, select, translate, Application: apply, choose, demonstrate, dramatize, employ, illustrate, interpret, operate, practice, schedule, sketch, solve, use, write. Analysis: analyze, appraise, calculate, categorize, compare, contrast, criticize, differentiate, discriminate, distinguish, examine, experiment, question, test. Synthesis: arrange, assemble, collect, compose, construct, create, design, develop, formulate, manage, organize, plan, prepare, propose, set up, write. Evaluation: appraise, argue, assess, attach, choose compare, defend estimate, judge, predict, rate, core, select, support, value, evaluate. Good criticism must be well constricted and well written. Critics often change voices when they write and they usually have a specific audience in mind. Books, films, television, and music critics share their personal approach to criticism and specific techniques that each uses. Critics study their medium carefully, take notes, and work to get the reviews or criticism correct. The best criticism is more involved with media arts as their platform. This contains cultural issues. Media critics share the most challenging parts of their jobs. Boosterism is the act of "boosting," or promoting, one's town, city, or organization, with the goal of improving public perception of it. Critics also genres within a genre such as classical music, jazz, or country western. The internet provides new access. The key to becoming a critic is to write and to write and to then write more. Criticism is actually the practice of analyzing, classifying, interpreting, or even evaluating literary or other artistic works.
6. Dahome art is visually beautiful but is often treated as craft. The colonial factions exposed the underlying nationalism of the event known as the 1900 Paris World Fair which ran for 8 months. Half the area was devoted to French imperialism while the rest represented other nations’ colonies. The image of the colonies in the late 19th and early 20th centuries was not coherent or consistent. While most countries were symbolized by famous monuments the Dahomian exhibit consisted of a group of thatched structures, suggesting that there was no civilized infrastructure. Images of African people showed violent behavior. Colonialism is justified by this behavior. Three figures from the 1900 Paris Worlds Fair represent the three aspects of African people. A symbolic image of Dahome is in the form of a stylized shark. It symbolizes Dahome’s determination to protect its shores. Algeria had much longer history on colonization than Dahome. The Algerian exhibit is symptomatic of a much larger transformation that took place at the end of the 19th century. This was the transformation of travel into tourism. Portraits of Algerian woman promote their familiarity to the broad public, conflation of dance with promiscuity in Arab woman. Insidious side to using indigenous people in colonial exhibits were the display of African men and women in caged enclosures along with exotic species of the animal kingdom. Europeans justify pornographic nature as scientific and artistic study. Women refuse to appear satisfied with their treatment. The Trocadero Museum is the French monument at the heart of the colonial exhibition and it displays are a pseudo-scientific discourse that emphasis racial differences. The French created a dichotomy between the Dahome and Algerian exhibits. Colonial material culture is elevated to the level of art and decode of information about cultural meaning. Material cultures are displayed throughout the West. They show no connection with cultural meaning and are evaluated the eyes of Western viewers who believe they are seeing art rather than material cultural objects. Contemporary displays as art in Western collections can be tied to appreciation by descendants of the original objects.
2. Wow!!!! What videos. I can’t believe how much I learned about being a critic. The video’s were a little bit all over the board meaning one end being a critic and on the other end still talking about African Art. All of the videos had tons of facts and were very informational. It will be interesting to see how I view the Power point Presentations after learning about being a critic.
